5G technology in iPhone 12 is much slower than 4G

One of the most widely advertised advantages of owning an iPhone 12 is the wireless carrier's 5G service. Apple even brought CEO Hans Vestberg to launch the iPhone 12 in October to talk about 5G.

According to PC Magazine tests, Verizon customers may want to turn off the 5G signal and adhere to 4G LTE, where the latter is faster than 5G in certain areas.

Verizon's main 5G network feature is the "Ultra-Wide" millimetre wave signal (UWB), which has a larger capacity than the 5G sub-services provided by other companies. But Verizon's mmWave-based network is limited to about 60 U.S. cities this is due to the speed of mmWave signals, and can exceed 1 Gbps when downloading data.

To develop 5G coverage, Verizon reallocates parts of its LTE/4G spectrum to use as 5G, using a technology called Dynamic Spectrum Sharing. But while testing the speed of the iPhone 12 Pro in New York, they found that the 5G network is usually slower than 4G.
