Alexander Zarov, CEO of Gazprom-Media, said the state-backed holding company had purchased a service called Ya Molodets.
The President added on Wednesday, that Russia's leading media company, controlled by state-owned energy giant Gazprom, will launch an app similar to the social network for video sharing TikTok.
Alexander Zarov, CEO of Gazprom Media, was quoted by the daily Kommersant as saying that the holding company had purchased a service called "Ya Molodets."
Zarov said the app was developed with the support of the Innopraktika Foundation, an organization run by Katerina Tikhonova, one of President Vladimir Putin's daughters.
Gazprom-Media "will use the project program to accelerate the creation of a new video service for Russian bloggers," Zarov said, adding that it will be launched within two years.
The app will support the sharing of short vertical videos, similar to the Chinese social network TikTok.
Earlier this month, Zarov announced that Gazprom-Media will launch two similar Sites to YouTube in the next two years, one of which is an improved version of Rutube Broadcasting, a Russian-speaking platform acquired by Gazprom Media in 2008.
In recent years, YouTube has become an increasingly popular platform for Russian youth, with some of the most watched channels garnering tens of millions of views.
The authorities have consistently intensified their efforts to tighten control over the Russian part of the Internet under the pretext of combating extremism on the Internet.
Earlier Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed legislation that would make it possible to block internet platforms, including YouTube, if found guilty of "censorship" and "discrimination."
